Copilot Cowork: Making it easy to delegate work

With Copilot Cowork, AI takes the step from being an assistant to becoming a colleague that can plan, coordinate, and carry out tasks on your behalf. This lets you focus on what actually creates value.

From assistant to colleague

Traditional AI tools often work as helpers: you write a prompt and get an answer or a document back. With Copilot Cowork this is taken a step further. Instead of a single task, you can give it a goal — for example to:

  • prepare for a meeting
  • gather relevant information
  • create a presentation
  • analyze data in Excel
  • summarize emails and documents

Copilot Cowork breaks the work into multiple steps, builds a plan, and works across Microsoft 365 tools like Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In other words, AI doesn't just create content — it also helps execute the entire workflow.

How does Copilot Cowork work?

First, Copilot Cowork analyzes your request and pulls relevant information from emails, meetings, files, and messages. Then it creates a simple plan with the steps and tools it'll use. Finally, the system carries out the work in the background, with checkpoints where you can approve or change progress. This way, Copilot Cowork acts more like a digital colleague than a typical chatbot.

Working with full context

A key part of the solution is Microsoft Work IQ, which helps Copilot understand the context of your work. It connects information across documents, emails, meetings, chats, and colleagues so the AI gets a holistic picture of your everyday work.

A shift in how we work

Previously, AI has been used to find information or answer questions. Now we're seeing a clear shift where we move from being users to becoming an Agent boss who hands tasks to AI agents that can carry out work on their own or alongside us.

This creates a new everyday work life where AI handles routine tasks and employees can spend more time on strategy, creativity, and important decisions.

When will it be available?

Copilot Cowork rolls out toward the end of March. Initially, only organizations that have enabled the option to use Anthropic's AI models can use it. Many organizations in Norway and Europe haven't turned this on yet, since it currently means data is processed outside the EU Data Boundary.
